I’m planning a GPS Photo Walk thing, details near the end, because …
Yesterday I mentioned “… will at some point get round to reviewing the GPS related software that’s built up on my laptop … “.
“Why?” you may possibly ask “Would you of all people not have reviewed all that stuff yet?” and if you were to ask that I may possibly answer it’s because I was busy with the move. Now I’d say it’s because I work downtown where GPS reception sucks and I have no useful GPS tracklogs to play with. At least not until I get a newer GPS unit.
Anyway in an attempt to resolve this to get a decent tracklog with matching photos I’m planning to go off on a relatively short walk along Ocean Beach.
So starting at the last stop on the N-Judah at 11:30am on Sunday 21st Jan, I’ll probably be dragging the rest of my family up the beach to Seal Rocks with a cheap GPS unit and camera. This should give me a lovely tracklog and a bunch of photos with which to try out various tracklog/photo linking tools and so on, that I’ll then write up, test out and so on.
Anyone is welcome to tag along, I’m not sure if Ice Cream will be involved but I sure hope so.
Upcoming Event is here.
Google Earth KML is here.
Email me if you want more info than what’s here or there.

If you take pictures of the city instead of the beach they will not look alike, will they?
Cheers and have fun.

Aha. So I’m not the only person who likes to wildly exaggerate the vertical elevation in Google Earth. Have a great walk.
Yeah, using a multiplying factor of 3 on the verticals turn the hill from what they actually *are* into how they’ll actually *feel*.
I’m told there are a few good and recognizable features along the beach to make it work, guess I’ll find out soon enough.
[...] I think enough time must have passed since New Year for people to recover enough to get the urge to walk everything off. Thomas Hawk over on the Zooomr Blog has just announced their own Photowalk this Sunday, with luck someone will take a GPS unit. Sadly in this instance I think the times will be too close to be able to get from the one I posted a few days ago, over to Sacramento. Lack of car and knowledge of public transport in the area doesn’t help either! [...]
[...] A couple of weekends ago I ventured out to grab a tracklog and some photos, which I’d then be able to use to test out various flickr/geotagging tools. I’ll get onto that in a later post though. [...]
[...] A few weeks ago we headed off for a GeoWalk. This was so I could get a good collection of photos and a tracklog, with which to try out various ways of linking the two together. [...]
I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you down the road!
