Flickr: *just* hit 10 Million geotagged photos

Just been sitting here refreshing our geo counter page and at 11:30am GMT (22nd Nov) we passed 10,000,000 geotagged photos …

Public geotagged photos: 7,428,600
All geotagged photos: 10,000,059

… I’d say that’s enough data to be getting our teeth into for the Version 2 mapping stuff.

I’ve just started seeing the first few hints of 3rd party stuff digging into the public 7.5 million location/tag library of data too. These are interesting times.

Interesting times == 3:30am in SF.

  1. congratulations! I’m wondering what would be the densest geotagged place on flickr or the place with the highest geotagging activity…

  2. Thank you :)

I’ll probably run some number crunching for some density information, once to find the area with the most photos, and once to find the most separate photographers.

Off the top of my head the answer is probably South end of Manhattan Island and then around the North East edge of San Francisco.

Before those it was the cemetery across the road from me, when I was testing code!

  3. I think you meant November, not December, eh?

  4. Hummm, yeah, good point, edited, ty.

  5. [...] Also, in the comments of the article at Techcrunch, I noticed some guy said that Flickr’s Geotagging had reached 10 million photos. Ten Million photos? Whoa, that’s quite a lot of photos! Read more on his blog here. [...]

  6. [...] Here’s a geocoder that finds places based on the combined knowledge - the tags, title or description of geotagged Flickr Photos. Example Application. Now that Flickr has 10 Million Geotagged pics, there’s a fair chance that people will add tags to them that describes the location. So searching for photos tagged with Manchester, will probably bring up a lot of photos that are located in Manchester. However, it will also bring up other groups of photos, and this is where clustering comes into play. [...]

  7. [...] A few weeks back I said that Flickr hit the 10,000,000 geotagged photo mark, well we’ve done it again. Only this time it’s the 10 million public photos mark … [...]
