Quicklinking: New version PhotoGPSEditor

Over on the MMISoftware blog they let us know that a new version (Mac OS X) of PhotoGPSEditor has just been released.

The two main upgrades seem to be…

  • Wizard to simplify and walk users through the geotagging of photos.
  • Support for the Sony GPS-CS1 GPS now compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.9.

Which is good for me, for when I get round to reviewing and writing up geotagging tools, which I keep telling myself I do really soon now.
Looks like a vast improvement so far, now all I need is for iPhoto not to kill the metadata.

Have a screen shot!

  1. I do hope Apple gets the iPhoto problem sorted out in 10.5.

As the developer of the above program I was amazed when I started the project to discover that all the required calls are present in Cocoa/objective C for reading meta-data in a photo, but they are broken when it comes to writing the data back. I guess this is the reason why programs like iPhoto kill meta-data when you edit a picture and then re-save it. Shame!

  2. Nice program, but unfortunately, flickr doesn’t read the coordinates out of the metadata. So, not good for me, yet.

I don’t know PhotoGPSEditor (I don’t have a Mac) but did you authorize the use of EXIF metadata in your account in Flickr ? (“Your Account”>”Privacy & Permissions”>”Import EXIF location data: Yes”).

For Windows/Linux users I’m developing an little Open Source application called “GPicSync” (to geolocalize pictures from a camera and a GPS receiver). More features will come soon:

  4. [...] In putting this article together I also came across a comment on a post at geobloggers.com in which the same problem was raised. [...]

  5. The above point raised by Andre has also been raised by a number of users of PhotoGPSEditor. Basically, some settings (as Francois says)have to be changed on your Flickr account and this is addressed in a blog post at MMISoftware (http://www.mmisoftware.co.uk/weblog/?p=241).
