Geo Rating System

There’s a discussion over in the flickr ideas forum going back and forth about the concept of putting user driven location relevantancy rating thingy into the mapping system.

This seems to be in response to people dropping 20 or so photos of drunk people in a pub onto the map. The drunk people could be drunk anywhere and therefore not relevant to the location, for other people anyway.

I’m not sure I buy into the initial argument, although I can see value in a simple “This photo totally isn’t here” link. Some of it is solved by sorting by interestingness, but that’s Flickr’s photo interestingness, which turns up great photos but is probably subtially different from location interestingness.

Striatic suggested a long time ago that a simple inside/outside flag would help a lot too, which I kinda agree with.

It’s an issue that most mapping sites will or are already having to deal with, I’m going to be following the thread with interest.
